Different types of room divider

People have been using room dividers for hundreds of years. Originally, they were made from wood, woven branches, cloth or tapestries. These days, you have even more options!

If you just want a light, flexible room divider, then you can go for a hanging divider or thin curtains. Instead of hanging across a window, these panels hang across the room and can easily be drawn back. You can also install accordion blinds or sliding panels which can simply be folded away when they’re not in use.

You can also set up more permanent dividers. Some people use shelves of plants or books to divde up their space. Or you could go for versatile luxury, and hang a room divider that doubles as a projector screen.

How to use room dividers

Room dividers have several purposes. They can divide up a space for different activities – for example, separating a dining area from a lounge. They can give you privacy, for example if you want to set up a den or a home office in one corner of the room.

With the right design, they can even offer sound insulation or protection from strong light outside. #1 Stay away from UV light

UV light is one of the worst things for soft furnishings. While we all love the sunshine, UV rays can do some serious damage: fading colors and bleaching fabric so that it looks thin, tired and shabby.

The best way to protect your decor from UV light is with window blinds, shades or even tinted windows. If you plan to be away from home for any length of time, you could also think about using furniture covers to keep the UV rays out.

#2 Control the humidity levels

Too much moisture in the air can be bad for soft furnishings. It can cause mold, fabric decay and even discoloration.

You can protect your home with proper ventilation and humidity controls. Most homes in the United States now have HVAC systems which should take care of the worst of the moisture, but you could also invest in a dehumidifier if you are concerned.

#3 Clean furnishings regularly

All soft furnishings need to be cleaned regularly – including furniture and curtains! If you have pets that shed hair, it’s even more important to clean furnishings to remove hair, dust and dirt.

Any stains should be cleaned off right away. You can spot-clean stains without having to wash the whole object – just be sure to use the right kind of stain remover, and test it first.

#4 Find a good repair service

Many people choose neutral colors for their window treatments. White, cream and beige are all classics. But the most fashionable neutral this year is gray. Look out for pale gray curtains, soft grey sheers, and weathered wooden shutters with a silvery tint.

We love a statement color – but not too loud! This year’s popular colors are the perfect compromise. Our favorite tones are sage green, blue gray, mustard yellow and dusty rose. These soft shades are gentle enough to work with any design.

Choosing a print for a statement shade? Think natural. This year’s most popular prints are Scandinavian-style leaf and flower drawings. Look out for prints in simple colors with an artsy, just-sketched-in-with-pencil outline.

Get the lighting right

First things first: you want to look great on camera, right?

The key is to have the  light shining onto your face – not shining from behind you, or overhead. If the light comes from behind you, it will be hard to read your screen, and you’ll be hidden by shadows. If the light comes from above, it won’t look flattering.

So try to position your desk opposite a window, or with a lamp shining in front of you. You’ll be amazed at the difference it makes.

Find the right backdrop

Finding the right backdrop for a video call can be tricky. You want to strike the balance between professionalism and a little bit of personality.

Of course, the safest option is a blank wall. But if that’s not possible – or you’d like to have a bit more fun with it – then there are other ideas you can try.

Many people take calls in front of their bookcase, or with an artwork hanging up behind them. You can also use a blind or window treatment as a backdrop. Just make sure your lighting is still OK!

So, for example, you could sit at a table with the blind closed behind you – but light from another window shining onto your face.

Shut out sound

Finally, make sure that you can hear and be heard comfortably. Close the doors and windows to block out sound from elsewhere. You can also use window treatments to insulate you from outdoor noise.

The surfaces inside your home also make a difference to sound quality. Rooms with high ceilings and lots of hard surfaces can make it difficult to hear well, because they create more of an echo. Try taking calls in a smaller space, with soft furnishings.

#1 Cracked or damaged slats

If you have wooden blinds, then the wooden slats can sometimes become warped or cracked. Aluminum slats won’t crack, but they can get bent or twisted.

Most manufacturers will give you one or two spare slats to use as replacements. These are quite simple to insert: just pop out the old slat and fit the new one in place. However, it’s a good idea to keep the manufacturer’s instructions to make the job even easier.

#2 Blinds won’t stay in place

Some people find that, after a while, the blind still rolls up and down – but it won’t stay in place! Fortunately, this is an easy fix. The problem is usually caused by a build-up of dust over time.

Dust the blind slats thoroughly so that they’re completely clean. If you’re still having problems, you can try applying a little lubricant to the blind mechanism.

#3 Blinds hang unevenly

Carefully check the blinds cord for any twists or knots. Once you’ve removed any tangles, the blind should hang better. If you’re still having problems, look at how the blind is attached to the window. Sometimes, blinds hang unevenly because they have not been correctly fitted – especially for windows with unusual shapes or sizes.
